We all remember this rhyme as our favourite childhood rhyme.
My son Siddhant asked me, why is that Fish isn’t able to breathe when out of water as air also contains oxygen ?

Fish account for more than half of all the vertebrate species known in the world, with more than 24000 species identified so far.

Fish breathe with Gills, which are arched structures on either side of the body that contain features ‘filaments and lamellac’.Fish need oxygen to live which they get by taking water into their mouths.

Water enriched with oxygen, passes over the gills. The filaments and lamellae – dump carbon dioxide from the body into the gills and water then flows out under the gill cover and the process is repeated.

Gills Work Only In Water !
Fish die when out of water because its gills structure collapse and the oxygen supply is disrupted.
